Four 8th graders from Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies entered the Ecybermission contest sponsored by the US Army. This year, over 13,000 students registered for eCYBERMISSION and formed over 3,300 teams. Out of those 3,300 teams, only 96 were chosen as winners. The LACES team received a criteria award for the Pacific Northwest Division. The entire team will receive $8000.00, that is $2000.00 for each team member. The team members are: Camille Didelot-Hearn, Alison Sanford, Galen Dodd, Stefano Rumi, and Coach Elizabeth Schlum.

The students’ projects was about how to irradicate the Whitefly infestation that is ruining our crops. They experimented with many different types of control methods, organic and nonorganic pesiticides, but found that the natural predator of ladybugs was the most effective and the not harmful to the environment. They were also selected to be in the California State Science Fair in two weeks and were invited to display their work at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Congratulations on achieving such a remarkable accomplishment!

eCYBERMISSION is a free, web-based science, technology, engineering and math competition for students in grades six through nine.

Students were able to enjoy a choice of stories read by teachers and college students in different rooms with themes to promote a college going culture at the beginning of the event. Fairy Tales were read in the USC Trojans’ Arena; stories about animals were read in the UCLA Bruins’ Den; books to promote peace and diversity were read in the Loyola Lions’ Lair; and story time with Dr. Seuss was held in the 186th Street Arts Academy. After the students finished listening to the stories, they received a free book to increase their pleasure reading libraries at home and support the academic play of reading 15-20 minutes every evening called by Principal Reed. The play is called Operation R.E.E.D. (Read Every Evening Diligently). The books were donated by the Molina Foundation and the Reading is Fundamental Program to promote reading, and the Kaiser Permanente Health Foundation donated healthy snacks to promote good nutrition.

The highlight of the evening was having the children bring their sleeping bags into the auditorium, sit on the floor with their friends, and culminate the Reading Pajama Party with a fantastic Magic Show by Mark, the Magician from “Magic with Aloha.” Mr. Kiyabu’s show kept the children and parents on the edge of their seats, laughing, clapping, and trying to figure out the magician’s magic. His show fit right in to the reading theme when he changed an ace of spade in a card trick to his favorite card of all, a library card. He told the children “a library card can be magical because you can check out all kinds of books, even books about magic.” The parents and teachers cheered to see that even a magic trick can emphasize that “Readers are Leaders!” The sight of students and parents enjoying an evening of quality entertainment and family time made the day a great success.

On Friday, February 5, 2010, the boys and girls at 186th Street School had a great time interacting with Orlando Scandrick of the Dallas Cowboys and five UCLA Bruin football players. The rain did not stop the magical moments for the students, parents, and staff members participating in the 5th Annual Super Bowl School Spirit Day. Ashley Armstrong and Ric Coy from the UCLA Athletic Department of Administration brought the Division I student athletes to interact with the elementary children. The students welcomed their special guests with the 186th Street cheer, song, code, and creed. The echoes of scholars and champions set the tone for the day. Principal, Marcia Reed, began the magical journey introducing their fabulous guests. Mike Romero, the District 8 Director, encouraged the students to strive for excellence. Ric Coy greeted the students and continued the theme of excellence as he allowed all of the players to introduce themselves and share their academic majors. Then he led the elementary students in a high spirited big Bruin 8 Clap, “UCLA fight, fight, fight…”

Orlando Scandrick, an NFL player, saluted the Wise Owls and reminded them to always do their best. He challenged the students to make the most of their elementary days because they will not be able to get them back. Afterwards, the players formed an academic huddle and Senior Linebacker, Frank Guzman, called the academic play. He told the children to come to school everyday ready to learn, respect their teachers, and always be good citizens. Then Big Mike led all of the players in a countdown as they shouted, “Excellence!” A very special moment for the students was when they received a high five for excellence from each player. Students from Loyola Marymount University and the Gardena High School Key Club assisted in running the inclement weather activities. As the students exited the auditorium, they received an activity card and went to different classrooms to enjoy the fun, which included a football toss, dancing in the dance studio, fitness activities, and story time to read with an athlete. The athletes appeared to have just as much fun as the children. Students, parents, and teachers wore their favorite jerseys and had a great time celebrating literacy and fitness for life. Every child in attendance received a free book to increase their pleasure reading materials at home. Many children left with autographs on their shirts, shoes, arms, and school spirit cards. The day was another great day in the life of the Wise Owl Nation. We will treasure the memory of the day the Bruins and a Cowboy came to cheer the students on, despite the rain.

Players in attendance:

Orlando Scandrick – Dallas Cowboys DB

UCLA Players: Taylor Embree (Junior WR), Frank Guzman (RS Senior LB), Jeff Dickman (RS Sophomore CB), Mike Harris (RS Junior OT), and Lowell Rose (RS Sophomore CB)

We salute Mr. Miyagawa and our Toyota friends for always finding ways to help our wise owls dream big.

LA Marathon Kids!

Saturday, March 6th, 2010 at 10 a.m. sharp, at UCLA’s Drake Track and Field Stadium, thousands of Los Angeles Area K-5th Grade school children and their parents will ceremonial complete their running/walk 26.2 miles.
